Frequent Flyer Programmes

Q. Is there one Star Alliance Frequent Flyer Programme?

A. No. In total there are 20 separate frequent flyer programmes, all operating independently. To take advantage of the Star Alliance network, all you need to do is join one of the programmes. You will be able to earn and redeem miles or points with one programme across all 27 Star Alliance member airlines. The programmes available to choose from include:

Q. How do I join?

A. In order to enjoy frequent flyer programme benefits, you must first join one of the 20 Star Alliance member airline frequent flyer programmes. We recommend that you join the programme of the airline you are most likely to travel most often. To join a programme, please visit one of the airline websites for further programme information.

Q. Is there an additional card for Star Alliance as well as for individual Star Alliance member airlines?

A. No, there is no Star Alliance membership card. Membership cards are issued only for an individual airline frequent flyer programme.

Earn/Spend Miles

Q. Can I earn miles or points with all Star Alliance member airlines?

A. Yes. Provided you are a member of one of the Star Alliance airline frequent flyer programmes, you will be able to earn miles or points on all qualifying flights across the network - on all Star Alliance airlines. A qualifying flight is any flight that is eligible to earn miles or points. For information on fares eligible for miles or points you will need to refer to the Terms and Conditions of the relevant frequent flyer programme.

Q. How do I earn miles or points with Star Alliance member airlines?

A. To earn miles or points you simply need to ensure that your frequent flyer membership number is entered into your booking reservation. We advise that you ask your travel agent or booking agent to enter it in at the time of booking. In addition, you should show your membership card when you check-in for your flight.

Q. What happens if my account is not credited with miles or points on a Star Alliance member airline flight?

A. If you do not receive your miles or points for a flight, you will need to contact your frequent flyer programme service centre directly.

Q. Can I transfer miles or points between Star Alliance airline member programmes?

A. No. Once you have earned miles or points in one programme, you are not able to transfer that balance to another programme within the alliance. All programmes remain independent.

Q. Can I combine miles or points for free tickets?

A. No. Miles or points cannot be combined between Star Alliance airline frequent flyer programmes.

Q. Can I redeem miles or points for awards on Star Alliance member airlines?

A. Yes. You are able to use your miles or points accumulated in one programme for travel awards on any of the Star Alliance airlines. For information and/or booking information, you will need to refer to your frequent flyer programme directly.

Q. How do I redeem miles or points on Star Alliance member airline flights?

A. If you wish to use your miles or points on another Star Alliance member airline, you should contact your frequent flyer programme service centre directly - not the airline you wish to necessarily travel on.

Q. Can I earn miles or points toward elite status on Star Alliance member airlines?

A. Yes. All Star Alliance member airline flights that are eligible for miles or points accumulation also count towards qualification toward elite status within your frequent flyer programme.

Upgrade awards

Q. Can I use miles or points to upgrade on Star Alliance member airline flights?

A. You can use your miles or points to upgrade to the next class of service on many of the Star Alliance member airlines. Currently, members of 13 of our frequent flyer plans can upgrade on 16 member airlines and we continue to add more airlines and programmes. Check with your frequent flyer programme for more information about upgrades.

Q. When can I request an upgrade on a Star Alliance member airline flight?

A. You can request your upgrade when booking your flight.

Gold Silver Status

Q. What is Star Alliance Silver and Star Alliance Gold status?

A. Star Alliance Silver and Star Alliance Gold status are additional benefits that you become entitled to when you reach a status level in your individual airline frequent flyer programme. These benefits are available to you on any of the Star Alliance member airlines, anywhere on the network. The benefits are:

  • Priority Waitlisting
  • Priority Airport Standby (where allowed by law)

Star Alliance Gold:

  • Priority Waitlisting
  • Priority Airport Standby (where allowed by law)
  • Priority check-in
  • Priority Boarding (where available)
  • Extra Baggage Allowance
  • Worldwide Lounge Access (some restrictions apply)

Lounges

Q. How many Star Alliance lounges are there worldwide?

A. There are overall over 970 Star Alliance member airline and dedicated Star Alliance lounges worldwide.

Q. What determines my lounge access – my Star Alliance status level or my flight ticket?

A. Your access to lounges is determined by your flight ticket, unless you have reached Star Alliance Gold status. If you have Star Alliance Gold status, you are automatically entitled to use Star Alliance Gold lounges.

Q. Will I be entitled to bring a guest into the lounge?

A. If you have Star Alliance Gold status, you are entitled to bring one guest into any lounge that you are entitled to use. Otherwise, it will depend on your flight ticket. If you have a ticket for an international first class flight, you will be entitled to bring a guest.

Q. How can I find out where lounges are located at different airports?

A. Please go to the Airport Information page and select an airport. There, you will find a map of the airport that shows the location of lounges. You may also use the Lounge Finder Tool to search for available lounges at your departing airport.
